Templates are a great resource to save time, create consistency and create pupil scaffolds. Once you create a template, you can use if over and over again, without risking writing over the file.
Want pupils to type up a newspaper but don't know how to get them to layout it correctly? Create a template, which they can then use to fill in.

Select 'New'
Select '>' next to application you want to open
Select 'From a template'
A new tab wil open displaying all the available templates
From inside Google Docs / Slides / Forms
From inside Google Docs / Slides / Forms
Open google application eg. Docs
At the top are frequently used templates
Select 'Template gallery' on right hand side of screen
All available templates will appear
